MOJAVE. XIX. Brightness Temperatures and Intrinsic Properties of Blazar Jets

چکیده
We present multi-epoch, parsec-scale core brightness temperature observations of 447 AGN jets from the MOJAVE and 2cm Survey programs at 15 GHz 1994 to 2019. The each jet over time is characterized by its median value variability. find that range temperatures for in our sample much larger than variations within individual jets, consistent with Doppler boosting being primary difference between their state. combine observed apparent speed measurements typical intrinsic Gaussian (4.1 +- 0.6)*10^10 K, suggesting cores are or below equipartition particle magnetic field energy use this derive estimates factor every source sample. For 309 both data, we estimate Lorentz factors viewing angles line sight. Within BL Lac optical class, high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) Lacs have smaller factors, lower sight intermediate low-synchrotron-peaked (LSP) Lacs. confirm measured radio more likely be detected gamma rays, a strong correlation gamma-ray luminosity sources.

Intrinsic brightness temperatures of AGN jets
We present a new method for studying the intrinsic brightness temperatures of the parsec-scale jet cores of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our method uses observed superluminal motions and observed brightness temperatures for a large sample of AGNs to constrain the characteristic intrinsic brightness temperature of the sample as a whole. To study changes in intrinsic brightness temperature, we ...
متن کاملBlazar Demographics with MOJAVE and GLAST
MOJAVE is a long term VLBA program to investigate the kinematics and polarization evolution of a complete sample of 133 active galactic nuclei selected on the basis of compact, relativistically beamed jet emission at 15 GHz. By fitting to the apparent distributions of superluminal speed and jet luminosity, we can constrain the Lorentz factor distribution and intrinsic luminosity function of the...
متن کاملMojave: Monitoring of Jets in Agn with Vlba Experiments. Vii. Blazar Jet Acceleration
We discuss acceleration measurements for a large sample of extragalactic radio jets from the MOJAVE program which studies the parsec-scale jet structure and kinematics of a complete, flux-density-limited sample of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Accelerations are measured from the apparent motion of individual jet features or “components” which may represent patterns in the jet flow. We find that...
متن کاملBlazar jets: the spectra
The radiation observed by blazars is believed to originate from the transformation of bulk kinetic energy of relativistic jets into random energy. A simple way to achieve this is to have an intermittent central power source, producing shells of plasma with different bulk Lorentz factors. These shells will collide at some distance from the center, producing shocks and then radiation. This scenar...
متن کاملThe power of blazar jets
We estimate the power of relativistic, extragalactic jets by modelling the spectral energy distribution of a large number of blazars. We adopt a simple one–zone, homogeneous, leptonic synchrotron and inverse Compton model, taking into account seed photons originating both locally in the jet and externally. The blazars under study have an often dominant high energy component, which if interprete...
